A Transport Agency spokesperson, Nick Rodger, said the trees posed a significant hazard to motorists as large branches would fall onto the road and nearby power lines.

Mr Rodger said this had caused widespread power outages three times in the past two years.

Work to cut down at least 300 trees will begin on Monday and is expected to take about six weeks.

Motorists are being told to expect delays, as traffic will be restricted to a single lane.
