Constable killed as Mercedes driven by Meghalaya minister‘s son rams into bike

A Shillong district jail guard was killed and a Meghalaya police constable was grievously injured when their motorcycle collided head-on with a Mercedes car driven by the son of Meghalaya health minister, Alexander Hek of the BJP early Saturday.

Probin D Sangma (38), the motorcyclist was declared brought dead at Shillong Civil Hospital, while pillion rider Probat R Marak, a constable of the 1 Meghalaya Police Battalion was admitted with serious injuries.

Marak was later shifted to the super specialty North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), a person familiar with the development said.

Both the dead and the injured are from the Garo hills.

Police said preliminary investigation has revealed that Aibansharai Nongsiej, the 28 year-old son of Hek was driving the brand new dark blue Mercedes bearing a temporary registration number. Nongsiej is undergoing medical attention for trauma and shock.

When ed, Hek said he didn’t have the faintest of ideas of what exactly happened but wants the police to conduct a fair and impartial inquiry. “The law must take its own course and the guilty must be punished,” Hek said after inaugurating a ‘Sankalp se Sidhi’ towards a ‘New India’ photo exhibition here on Saturday.

“I remained with the injured person throughout the night as he didn’t have any relative and also told the hospital authorities to extend all help to him,” a visibly shaken and perturbed Hek said.

It is not known whether Nongsiej was intoxicated at the time of the accident happened. Till the time of filing this report, top cops remained unavailable for comment or further inputs and it remains to be seen whether the minister’s son will be arrested.
